After de- and re-installing 4.1, it's now using XF86Config-4 as it should.
I've now added the FontPath to the file and it appears to be working
again. Maybe my hosed X was completely unrelated, but that was the last
thing I remembered changing.

I already had _that_ problem and Colin Watson told me how to fix it.
