showing a package as available?

How do I get dselect to show an available version of
packages I've compiled? For example, when I compile a
kernel with kpkg and install it, the package is then
grouped under "Obsolete/local Optional packages",
presumably because no available version is shown. Can
I fix this so that it falls into an "Up-to-date"
category? Thanks.
