custom kernel: how to make it bootable

Hi!

Due to the fact that I can't make kernel-image-2.4.18-386 use ext3 on my
root partition, I've compiled a custom kernel with ext3 compiled into
it.

I copied /boot/config-2.4.18-386 to /usr/src/linux/.config, ran
make menuconfig and changed ext3 to "y", then compiled the kernel
with make-kpkg --revision=mir.1.0 kernel_image and installed it.

When booting, the kernel hangs at the cramfs(?), complaining not to
be able to find the root partition. It seems my kernel wants to use
an initrd.img that has not been created. What am I doing wrong?
