I'm going shopping for a new motherboard/cpu/memory/etc. soon. I need to have a parallel port, usb, and firewire. Can anyone recommend stuff that works well, and is stable under Linux? Probably leaning towards AMD for price/performance (but I've heard of issues w/ some motherboards and ide chipsets being unstable).
I've had excellent results with the Asus A7V333, which has a firewire option. Just make sure you use a recent 2.4 kernel with it as the IDE controller is ATA133. Avoid the Abit AT7; a co-worker has one that crashes daily under Linux, and lacks PS/2, serial, and parallel ports anyway.
An alternative would be to not worry about FireWire and get something REALLY nice, as PCI FireWire cards are common and cheap.
