recommendations on new computer hardware..

Hi,

    I'm going shopping for a new motherboard/cpu/memory/etc. soon.  I need to
have a parallel port, usb, and firewire. Can anyone recommend stuff that
works well, and is stable under Linux? Probably leaning towards AMD for
price/performance (but I've heard of issues w/ some motherboards and ide
chipsets being unstable).
