I can only imagine the hundred-odd email snuh-like-cascaded flamewar
resulting from that...Having the middle name Elliot and being in first
grade when ET was making something of a comeback in the late 80s, and
the creation of that damned Polly Pocket toy in the early 90s
compounded by the tendancy of local teachers to read off first name
and middle initial for attendance, I can relate to having your name
abbreviated in offensive ways, though probably not nearly as severely
as the instance you mention.  (And people wonder why my nameplate
reads P. "Baloo" Johnson, instead of P. E. Johnson...I truly got
screwed on names...too much you can do with it...).
