And one more thing to check...

It might not be the software.  I had a set (popular brand name) of speakers
with an 8 Ohm input impedance.  When I upgraded to a newer sound card it
assumed that the speakers it would attach to would be not only powered but
also have a high impedance.  It finally dawned on me and I went out and
bought some newer (but still cheap) speakers.  Everything worked really well
after that.

It also happened to someone else I had to help out.
