Openoffice requirements question

What gives?

On the openoffice webpage (www.openoffice.org) it
indicates that openoffice will run on any kernal >
2.2.13 (Potato is 2.2.19).

But it also says you need glib 2.1.3. Potato only
uses glib 1.2. Even SID doesn't use a glib revision
of 2.1.3.

How is it that the kernel's of Debian are seemingly up
to day, but the glib revisions way behind?

How does one obtain and install a glib comensurate
with the requirements of some of the more recent
software?
