It sounds weird, but check that you have fonts installed.

$ dpkg --get-selections | grep xfonts
xfonts-100dpi                                   install
xfonts-75dpi                                    install
xfonts-base                                     install
xfonts-scalable                                 install

I am running sid, but I don't think this would make a difference.
