how can I check if modprobe worked?

I couldn't get my ethernet card recognized. after using modprobe{drivername} eth0 appeared after a [ifconfig -a] command and as well withthe [lsmod ] command1. how can I check if the computer can communicate through the card (theonly other machines on the nework are Windows.2. if this modprobe worked, what do I have to add to the modules file toget this module loaded at boot time?
