I haven't tried Gnome2, but I do like KDE3. For install instructions,
check out http://calc.cx/kde.txt. Basically it says:

Add to /etc/apt/sources.list
------------------------------------------------------------------
deb http://kde3.geniussystems.net/debian ./	<- primary mirror
deb http://kde.debian.co.nz/debian ./
deb http://kde.ping.uio.no/i386 ./ <- mirrors all kde debs
deb http://people.debian.org/~schepler kdegames/
deb http://people.debian.org/~bab/kde3 ./
deb http://people.debian.org/~njordan kde3.0/

Mandatory
------------------------------------------------------------------
# apt-get update
# apt-get -u install arts kdelibs kdebase

Optional
------------------------------------------------------------------
# apt-get -u install kdeadmin kdegraphics kdemultimedia kdenetwork
kdepim kdeutils

Honestly, it was pretty painless (I'm running Sid, BTW).
