Can't get ALSA to configure. PLEASE HELP!

Hi all.

I've had this computer for a couple of months now and I still can't get my
stupid sound hardware to work.

I have an on-board ac97 via-8233 based sound controller (from lspci):

coffee (steve)$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8367 [KT266]
00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8367 [KT266 AGP]
00:07.0 Ethernet controller: Lite-On Communications Inc LNE100TX (rev 20)
00:11.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233 PCI to ISA Bridge
00:11.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. Bus Master IDE (rev 06)
00:11.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB (rev 1b)
00:11.3 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB (rev 1b)
00:11.4 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB (rev 1b)
00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 10)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon VE QY

As root, I run 'alsaconfig' and things seem to go well until the end when I
get the following error message:

Loading driver:
Starting ALSA sound driver (version 0.9.0rc1): (card-via686a)
Setting the PCM volume to 100% and the Master output volume to 50%
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory
Could not initialize the mixer, the card was probably
not detected correctly.

Just for fun (and because I saw it on a couple of web pages), I try 'alsactl'
and get the following message:

% alsactl -d store 0
/usr/sbin/alsactl-0.9: get_controls:432: snd_ctl_open error: No such file or directory

And finally, because I can't think of anything else to do, I try a regular
'aplay' with the following results:

coffee (steve)$ aplay Vapors-Turning_Japanese.wav
No ALSA driver installed

Could somebody please, PLEASE help me get this working. I'd like to have this
badge of shame removed from me and be able to listen to my Vorbis files once
again.

Many thanks.
