Re: XFree 4.1 on ATI Rage 128 Ultra Pro II

We just set up 6 new Dell's with the following ATI card (output from lspci)

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 Pro TF

XFree86 4.1 also fails to work with this card, but as I researched it on the web, I was sure that I read XFree86 logs for 4.1 which listed the card. Perhaps RedHat added the drivers to their package.

Anyway, here is what worked for me. Install the usual Debian X packages. This will keep all the dependencies happy. Then download the binaries (ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.2.0/binaries)

and install them on top of the Debian packages (I said "yes" to all questions except install japanese docs). I first did this when Debian's XFreee86 was at 4.1.0-15. After the Debian packages upgraded to 4.1.0-16 (which hopefully is the release version for woody), I just reinstalled the binaries, and everything seems happy. You may have to restart the machine; as I recall there was some compliant about the DRM module version number after the upgrade and reinstall.

Running Debian unstable up to date installation, Kernel 2.4.18.

Trying to get XFree86 on an ATI Rage 128 Ultra Pro II.

Works just fine on a RedHat XFree86 4.1 installation. But can't get it
going with XFree86 4.1 on Debian. Seems that it is not supported under
4.1 but is on 4.2? Not sure why it it would work on RedHat.

What are my options?

Thanks,
