kernel recompile problems

Hello,

I am having alot of problems with a new machine I am setting up to use
as a firewall and proxy server - ( and new means that it is the first
time I have gotten my hands on it, it is a P150 with 32Megs of RAM) - I
installed with the 2.4.18-bf rescue disk which worked fine, I can set it
up, squid and the dns runns fine. Now when I recompile the kernel using
the kernel parameters posted with the rescue disk and boot it with that
kernel I can't use squid and any domain lookup from other networks just
don't work.

I am totally lost, and I really need some help. I would prefer not to go
live with the standard kernel, as I would also like to use things like
freeswan on it as well.

Thanks in advance
Gordon

BTW Please reply to me directly as I am not on this list.
