Well, couch potato might be a good description for potato's
up-to-dateness. FWIW, however, I installed potato first and then
upgraded to testing (the soon-to-be "woody") using apt-get without too
much trouble to speak of (except getting my sound card working at home,
but that's a problem with the YMH-OPL kernel driver and not debian).

I'd recommend installing only the bare minimum and then upgrading and
installing whatever else you need. It probably is more trouble than
installing certain other distros, but if you want as much automation as
possible during the install, you shouldn't be installing plain debian.

Libranet (http://www.libranet.com) is a good newbie-friendly distro
based on debian that you might try installing to get you started... and
maybe you'll like it. I haven't tried it myself, though, having started
out with Progeny, so I'm just speaking based on what I've heard.
