How did you determine that /tmp was 50mb?

It may be a seperate partition, use mount, or "df -h" to find out.

See if xcdroast will allow you to specify where to put the temp files.
That may do it for you.

No, it is not your swap partition, your swap partition won't show up in
your file lists.
