I highly recommend picking up "Unix for Dummies," as it covers the
basics quite well. I tend to steer people clear of "Linux for Dummies"
because it focuses entirely on Red Hat distros, which would be more
confusing than helpful.

Sounds like you've had some good, varied experiance, this shouldn't be
