problems starting X in woody

Hello,

I upgraded to woody from potato. I installed XFree86 4.1 and xserver-xfree86.
The chipset, 3dfx Woodoo3, is detected fine. I had problems trying to run gdm,
and I was adviced from this list to reinstall xfonts-base (thanks Thomas!).
What happened then was that the initial windows o gdm opened fine, but I was not
able to login in any session. Only the gnomesafe option in gdm worked.
I decided to deinstall gdm and wait until be able to start the X manager from
the command line before install a session manager again. But now I can't start
X. For example:

1) If I type "wmaker" in order to login in a WindowMaker session I get:
/usr/bin/WindowMaker fatal error: could no open display ""

2) If I use "gnome-session" in order to login in a Gnome 1.4 session I get:

Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library

Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
_IceTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.Ice-unix should be set to root
SESSION_MANAGER=local.nostromo:/tmp/.ICE-unix/194

Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library

Gtk_WARNING **: cannot open display

Honestly, I have no idea what is going wrong. And I need to put the machine to
work! Any help will be *very* appreciated!

Thanks!
