I have 486 DX2 50MHz with 20MB memory running Woody with 2.4.17 kernel
and many servers such as squid, dhcpd, ftp, pop3, and exim.  This is
acting as firewall gateway with NAT(ipmasq) to the cable system.

I tries X on this and worked.  But It was not practical on this :(

Nice thinkg is it is notebook PC with 2 PCMCIA NICs.

Normal 2.2 kernel requires 4MB memory to function.  8MB memory will
be nice.  1MB is pushing your luck too myuch I think.  You need special
pach for low memory.

Anyway, older release are less memory hungry.  Look into "slink" if you
have super low CPU power.
