no offence, but that's really not the significant issue. it's a regular
device file that existed intact up to two days ago that suddenly developed
the seemingly impossible characteristic of having been created on a day that
can't exist no matter whose calendar you employ. ls -al sees it but cat can't
find it. i can work around its corruption without a problem. touch updates
the date but cat still claims it doesn't exist. what i'm interested in is any
hints as to how this could happen in the first place
