Probably because the older kernel in potato's installer doesn't have
USB support.  At the boot prompt the BIOS is still handling all of
that so it works, but once the system is booted the kernel needs to
deal with it.  Get an PS/2 keyboard for the install (or move the hd to
a different machine) and then upgrade to a 2.4.17 kernel.  Enable the
USB stuff and then you'll be able to use it.
