A mutt question (new/different question)

I am relatively new to Debian. I installed mutt in order to avoid the clutter
of html mail, but sometimes I need to read email from people who send only html.
I think I should be able to do this using the 'v' key, but when I do so
first I get a screen with just a single line, and
when I press the 'enter' key, I get an error message:

/dev/dsp : Permission denied

What is happening? What do I do to fix?

More info.:

I do have a sound card on this box, but I have never gotten it to work.
I do remember answering 'yes' to a question about a sound card during the
installation of Potato, but it then said it couldn't find the card and went on.

Yes, I'm running Potato 2.2r5. "out of the box" except that, with Debian,
there is no real box.

I wouldn't mind getting sound working, but that really isn't my concern. I
mention it because I think that /dev/dsp has something to do with sound.

Thanks.
