Trying "a2ps" yields the same results were I to try "lpr": i.e.,

 sending job 'curtis@Debian3800+10' to lp@localhost
 connecting to 'localhost', attempt 1
 connected to 'localhost'
 requesting printer lp@localhost
 error 'LINK_TRANSFER_FAIL' sending str '^Blp' to lp@localhost
 job 'curtis@Debian3800+10' transfer to lp@localhost failed
[Total: 1 page on 1 sheet] sent to the printer `lp'
