debian newbie : 2 simple questions

hi all !

2 newb questions :

1)  what is the minimal package install to send emails from the shell ?? (mailx, zmailer-ssl ?) imperative is : SMTP daemon on port 25 must NOT be running.
2) how to verify if an ETH interface is really in full duplex mode and/or how to change it.
