Depends on the chip. In my machines I've go a aureal vortex 2 (I had to
compile a driver from sourceforge), an sb16 (picked the module at install),
an es1371 (picked the module at install), an sbLive (had to recompile my
2.4.x kernel for it), and a soundmax using the i810 module (had to complie a
2.4.x kernel for it). No difficulties, no command line options, just
modprobe, and it works.

PnP == Plug and Pray.

If you do want to recompile, or need to to get a new module, it's quite easy
to do, just read the howto. Just don't forget to re-run lilo everytime your
vmlinuz file(s) change. (I forget half the time).

xcdroast and gcombust both recognized by scsi burner and configured it
automagically. I hear IDE burners are a little more work.
