Thank you both, Andrea and David.  These were good suggestions that were
put to good use.  I did use the apt.conf file, and created the "partial"
dir under /home/gt/aptcache.  This worked like a charm.  197MB
downloaded, configured and done in 38 minutes total (it's great to be
less than 1000 ft from the CO on a dsl line--1.5Mb/s down on the cheap
service :^))
