I've been lurking on this thread for a while.  One possibility that hasn't 
been discussed is to assume mount points that can be automatically created 
(and destroyed) as either

if root then
 /var/mnt/$device
else
$HOME/mnt/$device
fi

or alternatively if the $HOME route is unacceptable then 
/var/mnt/$USER/$device
