(I'm replying to my own post)
or is it ident ? (same thing; tcpdump identified it as auth, the parameter 
from proftpd.conf is "IdentLookups  off")
I figured it out anyway...from suse's installation of proftpd :(
I think it is a resonable thing to do for debian too (to put  the parameter 
in the default proftpd.conf file; at least a comment)
