This last bit doesn't parse

apt sources list sites with a whole distribution - task-kde is a (virtual)
package held in (at least unstable - I am using that rather than pototo - I
am not sure whether potato has it) the database of files that the site has.

What is currently in your /etc/apt/sources.list file?

Apart from download time - why not just bite the bullet and upgrade to woody.
This has the facility to then selectively get bits of later distributions
using /etc/apt/preferences (although when I tried it got too hard because of
dependencies - no idea whether thats improved recently).
