It seems to me that something didn't get set up properly in the sound
part of your box.  Do other apps play sound? (mpg123, etc.)  If not,
and you do indeed have a functional sound card, you may have to play
with MAKEDEV in the /dev directory - or on second thought, do you have
devfs on that box?  It can play havoc with programs that expect a
certain device name if the symlinks aren't set up.  Hmmm . . .
Report back with:
ls -l /dev/dsp (the sound device)
dmesg | grep -i audio (looking for sound card at boot)
anything else that seems relevant.
