Re: x install problems

Hi folks,

I enter this post as my last ditch effort to get debian (2. 2r4) going here. I
m installing the binary cd's. All goes well up to the x install, whereby I get the message "transSocket unix connect cannot connect ernno 111" This will repeat over and over till I finally tire and have to do a crtl-alt-del. Upon reboot x cannot be found (as it wasn't installed).

Look above this error message; what you've quoted is pretty much the generic "I can't start X for some reason" error message; what's above it is where you'll likely find the real problem.

If you have a fast internet connection, you might consider changing your /etc/apt/sources file to point to testing (woody) or unstable (sid) and do an "apt-get update" followed by "apt-get upgrade" to upgrade from Potato to Woody or Sid. I think there's a fairly large jump in X between Potato and Woody (like, from X ver3 to ver4?), and I found that I had less trouble getting X working from sid than from potato. But if you want to stick with Potato, like I said above, look at the messages before the error message you quoted.
