Re: Sound newbie ... what is OSS, ALSA, etc all about?



I have the same card.  Initially it looked to me as if it wasn't
supported by OSS, but I think it's on the list now.  Particularly if
your needs are basic, it's probably easier to use the stuff in the
kernel.

As you may notice from my other posts, I've been having trouble
getting ALSA and pnp to work for awhile, though it was working at one
point!  My serial port and sound card seem to conflict regardless of
the combination and sequence of options I pick.

The advice used to be to get a card that let you configure it manually
to avoid problems, so it's not clear that PCI will make your life easier.
