isn't that exactly what it *should* do?  /etc/hosts is all about
mapping hostnames to ip addresses, and it's quite logical that you
should be mapping your own computer to the loopback!  please provide
said authoritative references to the contrary?

i'm running debain stable, and my /etc/hosts has just one line:
127.0.0.1       orange  localhost
