Xscreensaver weirdness

After I log into X, the first time xscreensaver runs, instead of just
blanking the screen, like it should since I have an empty programs
list in ~/.xscreensaver, it runs a random graphical thing. But if I
then add a program to the list in ~/.xscreensaver, run it again (it
uses the program I specify), then change ~/.xscreensaver back to the
way it was originally--an empty list of programs--then it starts
blanking the screen the way it should. Any ideas why it is acting
like this? Is there some other config file that it's reading?

Thanks.

To accuse others for one's own misfortunes is a sign of want of
education. To accuse oneself shows that one's education has begun.
To accuse neither oneself nor others shows that one's education is
complete.
