Errors with scsi DLT tape drives?

Hello everybody,

   Anybody ever use DLT8000 tape drives with Debian before?

I keep getting "i/o error" when I try to tar to it (/dev/st0).  I have cleaned
the tape drive, used different tapes, etc...nothing works?

What am I doing wrong?  Any ideas would be helpful?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
