I just figured out that I need to do "amixer set PCM,0 100 unmute:, 
which returns:

Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
 Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
 Playback channels: Front Left Front Right
 Limits: Playback 0 - 31
 Front Left: Playback 31 [100%] [on]
 Front Right: Playback 31 [100%] [on]

So I seem to be making some progress. Still can't produce any sound however.

Does that fact that amixer now appears to work indicate that I'm 
actually getting close?
