Check your networking configuration -- does your host resolve? X is a _networked_ windowing system, and requires properly configured networking in order to operate. This doesn't mean you need a network card; it _does_ mean you need your hostname resolving to where it is -- even if it's just 127.0.0.1 (loopback device). -- Karsten M.
