gs on console/lprng

i am trying to get a Epson Stylus Color Photo 870 working. following
info on linuxprinting.org i tried the .upp/lpdomatic filters and have
encountered an oddity with gs, unless gs is run from X or as root all
it does is output:

svgalib: Cannot get I/O permissions.

since lprng runs the filters as user daemon gs is quite broken for
printing purposes... i was also unable to get magicfilter to work
either (and it does not appear to support this exact printer, at least
not the versions in debian)

i tried installing the svgalib-dummy package but that just makes gs
puke a bunch of crap like this:

Unrecoverable error: ioerror in .setdevice
Operand stack:
    --nostringval--

Unexpected interpreter error -12.
Error object: (f80)op(379:.setdevice)0x10056274
Operand stack at 0x101b5888:

0x101be860: 0x0f oper --F---e-- 0x0000 0x1003aaf8 = %interp_exit
[.....]

the system in question is potato with a 2.4.2 kernel (with just
modutils, util-linux and nfs-common upgraded to those in sid), gs
exhibits the same behaviour under 2.2.18 as well.

i must be missing something obvious here but after hours of reading
and futile hacking i still haven't found it.. suggestions?
