AARGGGHHHH! no X in Woody

Hey,

I can't get X windows to work in Woody.  xdm doesn't
start on its own, and if I try 'startx', it says:

X: cannot stat /etc/X11/X (N such file or directory),
aborting.
ginving up.
xinit:  No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to
connect to the xserver
xinit:  No such process (errno 3): Server error.

what do I do?
