I had the same problem. After much fiddling around, with /etc/X11/Xserver
and many other files, I was going crazy...

Well, suddently I did a grep for "rootonly" in /etc/ and I found a file
called /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config, with these contents:
	allowed_users=rootonly
	nice_value=-10

Well, I removed "rootonly" and put "console" instead and.. it worked... :)
