If he's on kernel 2.4.x it's directly supported.

That's how I did my SB Live.  Though he did say he was pretty new so maybe a
new kernel compile isn't something he wants to jump into.

Go to opensource.creative.com click on the link at the bottom for latest source snapshots download the newest tarbal and read the readme. This is far and away the best way to make a sblive work.
