floppy kernel won't boot from hd

	recently i installed d 2.2 on a friends compaq 1810 p2 64
meg ram 6 gig hd laptop. since it wasn't mine i didn't select 'make
bootable from hd' during installation. yesterday i ran lilo and it loads
and starts the kernel which then panics; can't mount vfs. still boots fine
from floppy. i copied the floppy kernel to /boot/linux-2.2.17 - same
thing.

I haven't enclosed exact error messages as i forgot to write
them down before i left the house- I'm don't have internet access from
that box right now as the modem is a "winner" and during my lilo trip i
overwrote the first sector of hda1, the win98 partition (stop laughing.
actually, if anyone here's had experience doing that and recovering(?),
i'd love to hear from you off-list .)

oh yeah, the 2.2 runs great. X setup like a snap. because of the
winmodem i had to download *ALL* (well, i got a bunch off of a 2.1 cd) the
packages beyond base via windows/net vampire, selecting each dependancy
one at a time. Whoever organized the packages web pages did a great job,
all i had to do was go up one side of the tree and down the other. in the
middle of some of them i couldn't even remember what package i was
originally getting dependancies for. I reccomend this method as an
alternative to apt or dselect (yeah right).
