Are you sure you installed kde2?  What's your apt-sources listing for kde
say?  I ask because I had the exact same problem as the original
poster: the startkde script did nothing useful.  That wasn't the case with
KDE 1.  I didn't bother pursuing this problem any more since I'm pretty
happy with my helix/Window Maker set up and was just checking up on the
status of KDE 2.

THat's not really the case.  They're not official Debian packages, so they
don't need to follow the release cycle at all.  They are simply built to
work with potato, and will probably continue being developed (at least
until the maintainer gets sick of running 'stable').
