mouse not working

I have been having trouble getting my mouse to work.  This a what my
gpm.conf has in it;

device=/dev/mouse
responsiveness=
repeat_type=m3
type=bare
append="-l\a-zA-Z0-9.:/\300\326\330-\366\370-\377\""

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
