I have 64MB RAM, 300MB swap and it has worked flawlessly with
kernelversions from 2.2.1, and untill 2.2.17pre6, across SuSE, a little
RedHat and now Debian.

I had the problem with the standard kernel from Debian as well, so I
think it is a specific bug somewhere in 2.2.17pre6.

I think I will try to use André Dahlqvist's suggestion above in this
thread, and upgrade the kernel.

Thanks for your time, also to you André!

PS: Is it possible to log the memory usage in some way? It needs to be
something that writes a log to disk, because when I get the
    do_try_to_free_pages messages X freezes, and I can't use f.ex.
    xosview or gtop.
Maybe ``atsar'', I'll have a look at freshmeat, but other
    suggestions will be appreciated!
