xconsole

Am using a second box to learn about Debian Slink which I've used
for some months now on my main box.

I've never fully understood permissions/ownership/groups etc and so
have been experimenting by creating, deleting and so on. At one
stage I found my users were both in root group, but was able (easily
I thought) to correct this position. Now I find a problem with
xconsole which I can't solve and yet don't see how it can be related
to what I've been doing.

KDE is installed and seems to behave as before except that on booting
xconsole screen appears with no contents and a new screen starts each
time - I now have 8, one on top of the other. Whilst these can be
minimized or maximized, they cannot be closed from the 'x' button
nor the menu.

I am unable to find out exactly what xconsole is, how it works and
where the configuration details are. I've looked at the man pages, at
/usr/X11R6/bin/xconsole, and /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/XConsole,
but am too inexperienced to make any sense of things.

My boxes standalone and I'm the only user so generally work as root
even when dialling out with the modem. Security is not a concern, but
I shall soon employ a user account (hence the experimenting).

Can anyone kindly assist - now that I'm comfortable using Debian,
understanding why and how is becoming important to me. John.
