If X launches successfully (you'll see a herringbone pattern and large "X" shaped mouse pointer), switch back to a virtual console and run an xterm: $ xterm -display :0 & ...switching back to X again, try to run icewm, or another windowmanager (twm or fvwm are nice, simple, and very stable for this purpose).
