Attached is my /etc/lilo.conf. I hope it will help. Have you tried
/usr/share/doc/lilo?

[12:53:23 shaul]$ cat /etc/lilo.conf
# /etc/lilo.conf

boot=/dev/hda
compact
install=/boot/boot.b
map=/boot/map
vga=normal
prompt
timeout=50
image=/vmlinuz
        label=Linux
        root=/dev/hdb1
        read-only
image=/vmlinuz.old
        label=Linux.old
        root=/dev/hdb1
        read-only
image=/vmlinuz
        label=single
        append=single
        root=/dev/hdb1
        read-only
other=/dev/hda1
        label=MS
        table=/dev/hda
