RE: su question
Sorry for messing up the thread,
I accidentally deleted the original post.
I was going to suggest "chgrp"ing everything to "staff" then add
yourself to group staff, but that would mess with stuff in groups:
dip, shadow, ... and result in breakage.
How much would this break?
chown -R operator /etc/* ; adduser someluckyguy operator
