I don't know anything about mdaemon ... but there are several smtp mail
tranport programs (exim, sendmail, postfix, etc.). Exim would be the
default with Debian (potato/woody).

Add IPChains (2.2.x), ipwfadm (2.0.x) for firewall/masquerade.  Those
are kernel solutions.  Think there are also user space solutions???
